The third year of the decade heralded a lot of new releases and changes for Pakistani cinema. At that time, the industry seemed to be having a revolution with many big productions coming out. However, due to difficulties faced by participants in film production, these movies remained unnoticed and unjustly forgotten. This is unfortunate as they were really good and had shed light on certain issues plaguing society today like: patriarchy, ruralism and migration.
Haya Dhoom Afraad starring Nadeem Baig, Sanam Chaudhry and Maya Ali is a modern-day comedy about city life, ruralism and migration. The film also featured new musicians like Salman Ahmed, Natasha Baig, Zeus and Shuja Haider. It was produced by the "Nadeem Shab" director Nadeem Khan, who was handed the baton for this project by his father Yousuf Khan (Nadeem Shab actor/director/producer). Set in the city of Lahore, the movie revolves around characters who are not native to that environment; therefore their adaptation to it is less than optimal. One of the main characters is a dwarf named Afraad, who comes to Karachi seeking a job. A few scenes show him looking for a place to live. He finally settles in a slum called Sehri, which is located next to a market where he had previously worked. There he ends up launching his own business selling shoes which is portrayed as being run by an energetic and enterprising Afraad. Everyday there are scenes showing him at work selling his shoes on the street, people buying from him and being happy with the service they get from him and eventually cooperating with (respecting) him and also earning profit together in their joint revenue for hiring employees and having another source of income. Afraad also takes his friend with him, who is also a dwarf, and helps him get a job in the same shoe store to make money for his family. That shows the friendship Afraad has with his fellow small people. Unfortunately this wouldn’t last long as Afraad's friend dies due to illness (the cause of which was polluted drinking water), which makes Afraad make up his mind to leave that place. After that Afraad decides that he would travel to his village where he will be able to live in peace without the pressures of life in the big city. The next character is named Amna. She is Afraad’s neighbour in the city who has come to the city from her village after getting married. Her husband works at a furniture store where her father-in-law is the owner and manager of the company. She lives a confined life in her own house, has no friends and before moving to Karachi, was never exposed to that kind of environment which she found suffocating. She was having a hard time adjusting to this new lifestyle until she meets Afraad, who encourages her to go out more often and even helps her find a job after learning of her problems.
